In Song-dynasty China, burning incense and preparing tea were practiced together as two of the four refined arts, alongside flower arranging and hanging paintings. Agarwood is still the classic scent of the tea table.
Setting incense on a tea table
- Light the stick a few minutes before you warm the cups, so the room is scented before the first pour.
- Place the holder beside or behind the tea set, not between you and your guests, so smoke does not drift over the cups.
- One stick per session is enough: agarwood should sit behind the tea, not cover it.
Pairing suggestions
-
Root-Resin with aged pu-erh or dark oolong.
-
Insect-Tunnel with roasted oolong such as Da Hong Pao.
-
